Earnings Report

Well in the following of people such as John Chow and Darren Rowse, I decided to do a earnings report for this blog. Now unlike John and Darren I won’t break everything down into separate areas but just give you an overview of this blog’s earning power. This figure does not reflect anything to do with any of my other sites revenue as I treat this blog a little special than everything else I do on the web. Drum Roll Please, Are you ready? Here it is I have earned Zero dollars from this blog the past month. Wow great I’m rolling in it.

Now you may ask what is the reason for posting this? The reason I’ve earned Zero on this blog is not from a total lack of traffic, while I don’t have the numbers of the A-List blogger‘s, I do have some traffic. Not anything stellar but in comparison to some people out there who do not get any visitors at all or get 20 per day, its better. I average between 300 and 500 unique’s a day with with a little over 300 RSS subscribers. These numbers are not stellar either, but they are something to work with. Some people over at the Warrior Forum would say you are not monetizing it correctly.( I’ve come to the conclusion that most Warriors are idiots, but that’s another post.) In fact, I have not monetized it at all. I just put up a couple of ads this week, but historically I have not tried to monetize this blog at all.

At one time I did run some Adsense ads, but that turned out to be a total waste of space as I got very few clicks on the Ads. This type of site is not optimum for doing well with Adsense. At the advice of John Chow, I did decide to to try out BidVertiser to see how it may work. I ran Kontera for a while and I may do that again and I’ve posted an occasional Affiliate link in posts. I’ve earned a few dollars over the life of this blog, but not anything to brag about.

So why make the post? Well I decided to post this as a statement for myself. As I said I’ve been reading a lot of John Chow and the more I think about it, I really like John’s writing a lot better than Shoemoney or Darren Rowse. I’ve heard stories about how a lot of people don’t like John. Perhaps because he tells you to get off your ass and do something. I’ve learned over the years that a lot of people don’t like you pointing out their weaknesses. I have decided that I’m tired of working the 8 to 5 or 10PM job and I want to do something else. This blogging thing looks okay. Its not hard to do, you just have to build up an audience and you have to do a little work. I originally planned to do just that with this site, but I got lazy. I went for a long time without really posting in a frequent and timely manner. This is probably one of the worst mistakes a blogger can make. I went for a time when I did not post at all and even when I did it was just links to other blogs and added no real value to my blog. This stunted the growth of this blog and did not really help me at all. I plan on changing that.

I’m going to start monetizing this site. While my goal is to start making it pay the bills, I’m going to try to do it in a manner that is not intrusive. I’m also dedicating to actually posting more. While I won’t commit to posting every single day, I will try to do a lot better at actually writing something every couple of days.

One of the issues I’ve had with writing is finding topics to write on, but again listening to John Chow I may have a way to overcome that problem. One idea John suggested was to gather ideas from the comments of your visitors. This struck home as I wrote a post a couple of days ago about How Article Marketing does not work. One of the comments was very insightful and a point was brought up that I did not consider in my original post. I will need to write a follow up post and clarify my position on the matter as well as acknowledge the fact that the comment actually made some valid points against my original argument. Great idea John and I’m glad I decided to finally read your money making guide that was sitting on my hard drive. For anyone who wants to earn a little money through their blog should probably head over to John Chow dot com and subscribe to his newsletter. As a prize John will give you a copy of this book. He does not try to sell you anything other than giving up your email address for his list. There isn’t any one time offer and John even makes statements against the practice and also separates himself from the so called Internet Marketers who do employ these practices. John actually got me to thinking hard about whether I should associate myself with some of these so called marketers, but that’s a topic for another post.

So there it is my Earnings report. I’ll promise to do this again next year and I’m betting the results will be a lot different for this blog than this year.

RSSHugger goes viral

rsshuggerlogo

If you have not heard their is a new feed aggregator on the net. RSShugger is an application that allows bloggers to reach out to readers in a new way. The site allows bloggers to submit their RSS feed to the site and depending upon the traffic it receives is ranked accordingly.

Originally Collin LaHay created this site to earn enough money to pay off college bills and he charged $10 dollars per submission. While this is not much money, it may be out of the reach of some bloggers, especially the ones who really only blog for fun and not for profit.

At the request of various bloggers including John Chow, Collin has decided to remove the $10 barrier to entry. I personally think this is a good move for Collin. It’s really hard to convince someone of a specific directory site’s effectiveness anyway and one that is brand new such as RSSHugger is not yet proven. Collin now only requires a blog post review of the site to be included in the application. This action should help Collin grow the site a lot faster than he would have been able to do with the entry fee. I’m sure there will be a lot of blog posts around the web about this now and will create a viral effect for the site and there should be a lot of new blogs added to RSSHugger over the next few days and weeks. Hopefully it will take off for Collin.

I have not looked at the application much, but I do see some areas where it could probably be improved upon.

1. Currently when a blog is listed it only shows the titles of the latest blog posts and none of the summary. While this will force the visitor to visit the blog to read the story. It may be more effective for a lot of bloggers if there was a short summary. I know I would be more apt to click on a link and follow it if I had more information on the post other than the title.

2. There does not seem to be any method for various blog posts to be highlighted. There is a top blogs category and newest blogs category, but that it pretty much it. This is going to make it hard for people to get a lot of traffic. It would be better if there was some sort of social type interaction available where people could vote for their favorite blogs and have this information displayed to other readers.

3. There also does not seem to be any method for a reader to save their favorite blogs. Seems to me this is not going to be useful for the readers unless they can find the information they are looking for easily. Right now the site could be compared to a StumbleUpon for RSS feeds, where you are not sure what you may get with the Random Blog feature.

RSSHugger is an interesting idea and I want my feed to be listed, but I’m not sure its going to be successful long term. Of course this is still in beta and there may be other features planned that I’m not aware of.

No matter whether it really takes off or not, this shows the power of taking action. Collin saw a need for bloggers, listened to the feedback he was getting and created something that may fill a need. That is where a lot people fail on the Internet in trying to make money. You got to have an idea and actually do something about it if you are ever going to be successful at earning a living on the net.

Additional Benefits with Entrecard

You may have noticed the little Entrecard button on the side of this site. I’ve been running it for a couple of days and so far I’m much more impressed than I am with Blogrush. While Blogrush seemed to take off on this site at first it has dwindled and it really now just taking up space. I’m going to leave it for a few more days or maybe even a couple of weeks, but I have a feeling I’m going to have to chalk this one up to experience and dump it.

Now entrecard seems to be different. I was not in the network but a few minutes when I had my first advertiser request. Of course I’m sure that is because when you first get started the credits it takes to advertise is lower. Once people start dropping cards on your widget, then the cost to advertise on your blog goes up. It has to work like this to keep the economy in balance. So the newer members are a lot cheaper than the ones who have been around for a while. So for everyone quit dropping cards on Shoemoney‘s card. His prices keep going up and we all want a chance to have our advert placed on that site :-)

As far as the unexpected benefits, I’ve noticed an increase in the number of comments on this blog since joining the network. Since a lot of the people who are commenting are also Entrecard members it stands to reason that they are finding posts and commenting as a direct result of Entrecard. This is great and shows that Entrecard is not only a traffic generating network, but a networking vehicle for bloggers. As time goes along and more people join the network this is going to prove to be a powerful tool for helping blogs grow. Keep up the good work Entrecard and if you have a blog and have not joined yet, get to entrecard.com and add your blog.

I have also implemented the Top Commenters plugin in the sidebar. So if you want a free link from a PR4 site with the No Follow link turned off then make some comments. I do reserve the right to delete any comment that does not add value to this site, so if you want to comment then please do, but make the comments useful to other readers. Spam will be deleted as always without any warning or reason.
