Gorilla Link Love

Its time for another installment of Gorilla Link Love. Here are some of my favorite posts from around the blogsphere this week

ReadWriteWeb posts some great tips on using twitter for your social media needs.

DoshDosh provides information on how to expand your blog’s reach in 2008 and beyond.

And probably the most entertaining post or series of posts I’ve read this week was from ontempo on how to launch your stardom into the blogsphere. While I found it very entertaining there are some decent tips that you could use to help build your blog prescience. If you have a fairly new blog or may be thinking about starting a new one then you may want to check this out.

5 WordPress Theme Development Resources

I have finally decided its definitely time for me to learn how to develop WordPress themes. I’m too cheap to pay someone else to develop a theme when there are so many free ones around the net. In No Nonsense terms it really does not matter what a blog looks like anyway. The most important thing is the content and I still believe that, but I’ve come to the conclusion that I want something unique on this blog. Plus there is also the benefit that if I learn how to create WordPress themes and maybe even a few plugins then that could create a great resource for this blog’s readers as I could offer some themes and plugins up for download. I never really took the time to learn PHP, but that will be coming soon. I don’t see it as much of a problem. After all I do have a programming degree, my only real obstacle is that I’m graphically challenged. I know what looks good once its created, but envisioning it from scratch is sometimes difficult

I decided I’ll let you guys learn along with me if you so desire. I’ve found a few resources that will help me with this task so I’ll share them here.

WordPress Reference Guide. This is a little basic but provides several of the needed tags in a quick and dirty fashion.

Advanced WordPress Guide This is an extension of the above guide and I’m sure it will come in handy as I advance.

Creating Widget Aware themes is one of the reasons I want to start developing my own themes. A lot of the free themes only include a minimum number of Sidebar Widgets in the themes. This means if you want to add some content to the footer or after a post you are stuck modifying the theme code. This is not very user friendly so my themes will have Widgets in all the right places. This little short blog post is a great resource.

Tagstention is one of two Dreamweaver Extensions I have located to help me in the process of developing WordPress themes. I’ve only played around with it a little bit, but  can already tell its going to make life a lot easier.

Another Extension is Dreamweaver Template Builder it does basically the same thing as TagStention. I installed them both in my copy of Dreamweaver and I’ll decide later which I like better.

Getting to first base with Social Media Marketing

One of the blogs I read from time to time is TopRankBlog and they published an article a few days ago of a review of Getting to First Base with Social Media Marketing which seemed interesting. Well the author of the book commented offering bloggers a review copy of the book, so I thought it might be interesting and sent the author an email. My review copy was sent to me today. Of course I was thinking like a blogger when I requested the book and thought it would be more of a tutorial on how bloggers can take advantage of social media networks such as Facebook, Digg, or the countless others to increase our web traffic. I never bothered to read the actual sales copy at  Social Media Ready if I had read the copy I probably would not have asked for the copy as its not really targeted at me. Its targeted at people who would like for me or other bloggers to blog about their products.

Even though it was not targeted at me I found the book to be informative from the standpoint that it is written for people who may come asking me to advertise their wares on one of my sites. Its sometimes good to know where the people from the other side of the table are coming from. Since this is the target market a lot can be garnered from reading this eBook. Of course if you want to learn about Social Media from a blogger standpoint then it would be a waste of your time and money. While the definitions and advice may be useful for a marketing relations manager who still have trouble reading their email, but for the readers of this blog I don’t think you will learn anything about the Social Media sites you frequent. But on the other hand if you would like some incite into some of the techniques Marketing professionals  may utilize when contacting you then it may make since for you to request a review copy otherwise I doubt it will be of much use to any one who is from the other side of the equation and are building blogs for fun or profit.
