The Dip

I’ve been reading some of Seth Godin’s work lately and I’m amazed by how much information he provides. A lot more than most of the 97 dollar eBooks a lot of people offer. I came across a post about his book “The Dip” and it looks to be full of great information that a lot of marketers can use. I have not read the book yet, but I will be going to buy it soon as I need something to read tomorrow while I’m relaxing by the pool tending the barbecue.

It occurs to me that this is what is wrong with a lot of marketers. So many people get out there and try some new tactic to earn a living on the net. Whether the tactic is valid or not we’ll just suppose it is a valid technique and will earn money if executed properly. But here is the problem most people won’t see it through the dip. Just because something works for one person does not mean it will work exactly for you. You may obtain some initial success, but there will also be downturns.

Lets take Bum Marketing for example. When this term was introduced their where hundreds of post about this on the WarriorForum. Then followed a rash of WSO’s and people saying they had the secret to bum marketing. Many people tried it, some had success and some did not. There where hundreds if not thousands of Squidoo lenses created, there were thousands of articles created and submitted to ezine articles, goarticles, whatever other article site you can imagine. Over night a lot of people where proudly calling themselves bum marketers. But this seemed to have died down. Why because most people could not get through the dip. Whether they could not get through because of the work that it requires or because of the increased competition is a question that I can not answer.

I did notice that quite a few of the articles sites are now not allowing affiliate links in articles submitted. Some always have but others stopped allowing it. There are so many squidoo lenses on various subjects now just for the purpose of promoting some clickbank product that you can’t even find good lenses with an unbiased opinion. I expect this will go down as this technique is forgotten. Of course this technique was no different than Affiliate marketing has always been. The key to affiliate marketing is a simple as this. Get your affiliate link in as front of as many eyes as possible and the law of averages will let you make a percentage of sales. Some people are better at copy than others and thus they make more sales. But the technique is the same as it has been since Amazon created the concept years ago. Just because there is a new name doe snot make it different.

The important item is to get through the dip whether that dip is caused by increased competition or whether its caused by your own lack of experience does not matter. figure out what has caused the dip and figure out a way to continue climbing the mountain to reach your goals.
