Absoulutely, please read part three and I pretty much made this same point. Too many people try to copy these and other guys and never really develop their own voice with their blog. I personaly don't see any one becoming overly popular without finding an unique point of view. Of course I guess you could always try to buy your way to the top. http://brucehopkins.net/seo/buy-your-way-to-a-list-status.php

Who cares how either of these guys make money? I sure don't. If you want a better blog I would suggest writing less about what others do and try to be original and write what you do. If I want to know what the others do I will just go to their blogs.

Yeh, Darren sorry about using that word. I should have thought of that when I made the post, but wasn't thinking about the almighty hand of Google.

I really wanted to make the point of this series to be that bloggers that while they should learn from the techniques applied on blogs such as yours that they need to develop their own voice and style for the blog and not just report on what the other bigger blogs are posting about.

AS a member of Entrecard, I've visited a lot of blogs I may not have normally visited and I see this more and more. Seems like a lot of people think if they can jsut get noticed by someone with a lot of traffic and that person decides to throw some link love their way then they will be an over night success, but it takes more to build a successful blog that people want to read than just a few links and short term traffic.

You need repeat visitors for a successful blog and the only way to get that is to have some unique that people can't get somewhere else.

Thanks for commenting here, I guess I stood up and yelled hey look at me loud enough :-)

yeah - I thought I'd clarify the 'selling links' thing because Google doesn't like it when they see a site selling them - and I don't want to get penalties there :-)

With b5 - the ad space rates are based upon the traffic on the site. I did a bit of analysis of what other blogs in my niche are charging and while it sounds steep - it's about normal when you consider my reach in comparison to them.

Ads on PB are sold by b5, but they are specifically targetted to ProBlogger - ie the ads are sold on a blog by blog basis with ProBlogger and other big blogs on the network (like Copyblogger). We do sell other ads across our channels - but most of what you see on ProBlogger is done on a targeted basis to the one blog.

Hope I've understood your confusion right.

@Darren, thanks for the clarification. I considered the 125x125 in the link selling mentioned above. I referred to them as link becuase at the basic level that is what they are, but I see your point that these should probably be classfied as advertisements rather than link selling.

I don't understand the b5Media comment. I have heard that you guys pay the bloggers, but I was referring to the adspace sold on the blogs, which is really steep. It would seem to me that since problogger.net is a part of b5Media then links sold from b5Media could be targeted as advertisments on ProBlogger.net. Please correct me if I'm wrong in my assumptions.

thanks for the write up - there are a few comments that I'll make to clarify some things you've said. I'll write them as a list to get through them quickly:

- I do run affiliate programs but they're not the biggest earning on the blog. Advertising does better.
- I don't sell links on my blog. I do sell button ads (125 x 125 pixel ads) - not text links.
- The b5media links are to other blogs in our network - mainly my coworkers. b5 is a network of blogs that I cofounded - we don't actually charge people to below - we own the blogs and pay the bloggers who write on them for their blogging.
