Monetizing blogs

Steve Pavlina has an interesting post on his blog about how he is planning on changing the revenue model of his blog this year. Many of you know that Steve earns a decent income from his blog’s advertising in the 10 of thousands per month. I find it interesting that he is going to mess with that model. Basically Steve says he is going to leave the Advertising model with Adsense he currently employs and move more towards a model where he sells his own creations in the form of eBooks and Audio. This is interesting and I’m curious as to how it works out.

Steve has a vast following of loyal readers and this may work out great for him. Of course that depends on how many of his readers will actually fork over money for whatever products he creates. I personally think he will do fine with this move and make his blog more interesting. Of course time will only tell whether this is a good move for Steve or one that will need to be back tracked later on. I’m sure Steve like many of us have seen a decline in the amount of income that Adsense is able to produce and may be one of the reasons for this move. I know personally my Adsense income has taken a drop over the past few months while impressions and CTR’s have increased. Many niches just do not seem to produce the same amount per click as they did just a few months ago. For example, I have a couple of blog/sites built around the health niche, I won’t tell the exact niche, these sites where paying an average for $3 per click just a few months ago. Now if I see a 2 dollar click then that is very good and most of my clicks have went down to the pennies per click.

I’ve got a decent SE position with these sites and some decent traffic( not great but decent) so I’ve been thinking of following Steve’s lead and creating some products around this niche that I can sell and start making my money back. Perhaps Adsense is dying as it has been predicted. Regardless of where you come down on the whole Adsense or PPC model in general it is not as lucrative as it once was and you should probably be thinking of other methods to monetize your blogs and sites.
