I wrote on my views about Article Marketing and why I don’t think it works the other day. Matt Ellesworth from ArticleSnatch.com made an interesting comment on that post which prompted me to make an update to my original post. Matt makes a good point about when it makes sense to do Article Marketing. If you have hundreds of articles on your hard drive with nothing else to do with them the perhaps it would make sense to just post these out on the Article sites in hope of building backlinks. So if you have hundreds of PLR articles on the same or similar topic for a site you wish to promote then you could put those out on the sites.
Of course the main thing here is time. To submit PLR articles to the Article Directories then you will need to rewrite them at least partially or they will get denied for publication. You also run the risk of not many webmasters picking up your article as a lot of PLR articles are not written very well. Could you not build the same amount of backlinks in other ways. The objective with any of these techniques is to raise search engine rankings and traffic. Any method that accomplished these goals are a good use of your time and should be investigated.
Robert Eilers responded to my original post and suggested commenting on other blogs as another method for increasing traffic and search engine ranking. A lot of people have suggested this on various blogs. Not only will you get traffic from well thought out comments on some popular blogs in your niche, you can also get some backlinks. While a lot of blogs still impose the nofollow attribute on their comments, there is a movement among a lot of Bloggers to remove this attribute.
Even the more popular blogs that still have the no follow attribute have recently moved towards providing the top commenter’s plugin which rewards the most active commenter’s with a no follow link from their main site. This has a lot of benefit as these are follow links and they will pass PageRank to blogs on their list. Of course you have to add value to the blog or your comments will not get approved. So the technique should really be to add intelligent useful posts to other blogs. Don’t spam people because those will not get approved.
The real power of commenting intelligently does not come from the actual comment, but from the exposure you will get from the comment. If you post intelligently, then the blogger or one of the other readers of that blog may notice your blog and then write about you. A well placed link on a popular blog can bring in thousands of visitors to your blog.
This all boils down to time management. If you can build a lot of traffic utilizing Article directories and you already have more content than you can use on your own sites, then do it. But if the same time could be spent could be spent on other promotion techniques, then it may make sense to do those and keep your content for your own use. A no nonsense approach way to this is to test any approach and not just blindly follow advice given out in Internet Marketing forums.

Submitting articles can be an effective way to get both traffic and backlinks in my opinion.
There are only two article directories that I have had decent results from.
1) EzineArticles
2) Searchwarp
I have noticed a few things
The better your articles, surprise, surprise the better they do on average although agreed it can be hit and miss.
I don’t forget the type of traffic your likely to get, most are coming via article directories from the search engines.
New visitors are always welcome to my sites, especially from search engines. These folks usually convert well for me, either as a returning visitor or advertising.
Good luck with your efforts.

Objection! Article marketing do work for me you can get traffic and back links if you write a great article and submitted them to some article directories like what ryhan said
Article Marketing might not work, but it DOES work in bringing a decent amount of traffic. I know of a guy who used article marketing and in the SERP’s for one of his keywords, 7 out of 10 lead to his blog, with about 2 or 3 coming from the article directories.
The thing with article directories is that you need not re-write your article totally, just the main keywords and such. There IS a technique to doing article marketing correctly, just as there is to SEO.
So saying that article marketing does not work is probably not quite right because some really depend on them for a high percentage of their traffic. Though, article marketing is getting saturated as time goes by… ![]()

After looking around some of the article directories, I decided not to submit content there for two reasons:
1> A lot of the articles have poor grammar/spelling etc.
2> there is a fair proportion of rehashed content.
Not only that, I find it labourious to write article after article. Besides, commenting on blogs kills two birds with one stone:
1> The obvious link back
2> It introduces you in a less formal way, allowing others to get to know you and maybe network with you.
And besides its fun! So yes, compared to commenting I think that article directories are not worth the time.
