Blogging has become a preferred way to make a little cash on the net. There are a couple of reasons:
1. There are a lot of blogging platforms out there most of which are open source( read free) and easy to install.
2. Most of the platforms are very easy to use and do not require a lot of effort to learn and get your content out on the web. I personally like WordPress, but others like typepad, CommunityServer, and a host of others are just as good.
I was reading the WarriorForum like I seem to do a lot instead of working( but that’s another post about how much time I waste sometimes) and I saw this post. Seems like one of the Warriors managed to get his blog Dugg on digg.com and now it’s on the first page and the traffic is just rolling in. Over 8K visitors today alone.
This is great, but its not quite so great as the blog is hosted on wordpress.com which does not allow you to advertise. So this warrior is getting a lot of traffic and really no way to monetize it. The post that was dugg is on the subject of a Police Officer who got tasered in a very unusual place and it seems very painful. You can read the post for the full details as it hurts me just thinking about it.
I’m truly sorry for the Warrior, but he has just learned a valuable lesson about who really owns the content when you use a free service and the pitfalls of trying to save a few dollars on hosting fees. You can get a cheap host like HostGator for just a few dollars a month and you have the freedom to do what ever you need to do with the content and put the money in your pocket if you get lucky and get Slashdotted or dugg enough to wind up on the front page of such a popular site. Think about your long term goals and make decisions that will help you achieve those goals.
