One of the blogs I read from time to time is TopRankBlog and they published an article a few days ago of a review of Getting to First Base with Social Media Marketing which seemed interesting. Well the author of the book commented offering bloggers a review copy of the book, so I thought it might be interesting and sent the author an email. My review copy was sent to me today. Of course I was thinking like a blogger when I requested the book and thought it would be more of a tutorial on how bloggers can take advantage of social media networks such as Facebook, Digg, or the countless others to increase our web traffic. I never bothered to read the actual sales copy at  Social Media Ready if I had read the copy I probably would not have asked for the copy as its not really targeted at me. Its targeted at people who would like for me or other bloggers to blog about their products.

Even though it was not targeted at me I found the book to be informative from the standpoint that it is written for people who may come asking me to advertise their wares on one of my sites. Its sometimes good to know where the people from the other side of the table are coming from. Since this is the target market a lot can be garnered from reading this eBook. Of course if you want to learn about Social Media from a blogger standpoint then it would be a waste of your time and money. While the definitions and advice may be useful for a marketing relations manager who still have trouble reading their email, but for the readers of this blog I don’t think you will learn anything about the Social Media sites you frequent. But on the other hand if you would like some incite into some of the techniques Marketing professionals  may utilize when contacting you then it may make since for you to request a review copy otherwise I doubt it will be of much use to any one who is from the other side of the equation and are building blogs for fun or profit.

Thanks for the write-up. Yep, the book is definitely targeted at marketers and small business owners, as opposed to bloggers. There are probably some tips bloggers could take away about promoting their blogs, but they’re definitely not the audience.

I agree Darren, while its not targeted to bloggers it has some information that may be useful to bloggers. There are also some very amusing ancedotes in the book.
