Death of Social Networking Sites

Lee Odden has an interesting post on his online marketing blog titled Lowdown on Spamming Social Media sites. I’ve used these sites in the past not really for a source of traffic , although they can be used for traffic, but as a method to get the search engines to crawl a new site. What I’ve found is even though you may get some short term traffic from these sites that traffic is usually not very targeted and as a result does not convert into your needed actions.
I will admit that its very cool to get on the front page of dig, but for most people I’m sure it just provides a mechanism to load test your server. I’ve had some conversations with other marketers on this subject and the consensus was that while it may contribute to a lot of traffic, we could not really see where the traffic actually converted. If traffic does not convert then it’s a useless exercise.
If you subscribe to Lee’s thoughts then this practice has been abused by marketers and is now pretty much dead. Just what we needed another death before the end of the year. The bottom line is this sort of things come and go every year and when they are abused and talked about openly on forums, they stop being as effective.
I’ve found a new thing this year and as far as I know I’m the only marketer who has realized this trick. Of course I’m sure Allen Says and gang would just smile and say we were doing that years ago.
I found it by accident as I was surfing one day not too long ago and its working pretty good for me. I thought of putting it out in a WSO to earn a few bucks before the end of the year, but then I thought nope, I’m keeping this one to myself.
The bottom line is fads come and go, but there is one thing that stays in fashion and has since the beginning of the net. And that is good content. Good content will always triumph. It will survive Google slaps and algo changes. And it will also survive the death of the Social Networking Sites.
Unless I read something else today that makes me want to post again, this will be my last post of the year. I wish you and your family a happy new year and hope all your dreams come true in 2007.
