Entrecard growing pains

If you are an avid user of Entrecard then you may have noticed they have been having some growing pains. I joined Entrecard as soon as I heard about it, which was a time when the site only had a few blogs. Now there are over 5000 blogs listed in the system. I don’t think Graham and crew really expected it to grow as fast as it has. Well with this growth you should expect some issues. And there have been some. Whether its would sluggish response of the system to temporary time of drops not getting counted. The issues get fixed, but you still have people complaining on the forums.

I for one do not really understand the complaints. Yes the system does work, but a the same time, its not like it costs you anything. Some people are even earning money by selling credits. My personal opinion is since I know a little about programming, that the guys are doing a really good job of incorporating enhancements requested by the users as well as the constant battle the face from the people you want to spam the system for personal gain. Whether these are attempts to gather credits in other ways than how it was designed or whether its just spamming members with your latest join this program message. As the system grows also grows the number of people trying to use it for their own gain without regard for people who want to use it as it was designed which is to allow bloggers to obtain advertising on other blogs.

Several high profile bloggers have commented that Entrecard traffic is worthless. In someways I agree with these people as the traffic does not convert, but that really does not mean its worthless. It just may be worth less than traffic you get from the search engines through a long tail search.

The one real weakness I see in Entrecard is the basis of how the system works and this is not really Entrecard’s fault. Its the spammers who are trying to game the system. To earn credits in Entrecard you must surf sites and drop your card. Many of the spammers have realized this so they are putting up popups or pop unders to try and gain some revenue from the Entrecard surfers. Some of these ads have even been of a pornographic nature. Of course then there are the blackhaters who will attempt to install spyware or adware on your computer. Of course the people at Entrecard will kill off these sites when ever they are discovered, but the spammers will just come back with a different email address and another site. So when ever I surf Entrecard sites I make sure my Spyware definitions are up to date and I always use Firefox to drop. Now firefox is not a sure way to combat these items, but its is a lot safer than Internet Explorer. I wish there was a way to get rid of these sites, but I don’t see anyway technically to do it.

Overall, I think Entrecard is a great site with a lot of potential. It can really help a site launch into the blogsphere, but some pains should be expected. For those people who constantly complain, just give Entrecard a little break. The service is provided basically free and the only cost is your time( which is a cost). Perhaps it should be called a Beta, but it is coming along and as long as they can keep the doors open, the service should really become a true asset to the blogsphere.

Build Backlinks Best Value by Widgets Meme

Considering the new features happening over at Entrecard, I thought I would start a meme in celebration.  If you have not noticed, there are quite a few changes in the dashboard as well as in statistics. One of my favorites is you are able to tell exactly how well you did on any particular day of advertising on a blog. This helps you to determine ROI and help you to chose the best blogs for you to spend your hard earned credits on. I personally love this new feature. Entrecard  has also been busy building some new features on the dashboard, which ads to the social aspect of Entrecard. You can read all about these new improvements on the entrecard blog.

Okay to the Meme:

1. First link back to this post so people will know where the Meme came from and link to the person who tagged you, Of course this is more of a request than a rule. I’m not Sam Freedom afterall :-)

2. Link to each of the blogs listed in your Best Value by Widget table. Once you link to them send them a message and let them know they were tagged.

3. Now go through everyone of the blogs you list and stumble, sphinn, digg, submit to propeller, submit to reddit one of their posts or any other methods you can think of to help the blog‘s traffic, such as favoriting the blog on technorati. You can do any or all of these things, but the more the better it will be for everyone.

4. Once you post  the meme message the person who tagged you so they can go to your site and stumble, digg or whatever to help the people you tag. It would also be nice if when you passed a site with this meme posted if you would hit all the sites listed with a little social media love. It will only take you a minute to help out a fellow blogger.

5. If we can get quite a few people doing even half of this meme, then everyone involved should see a dramatic increase in traffic to their blogs as well as help them build up their backlink count.

So here are my best value widgets:

Is Entrecard Dying a slow and painful death

John Cow thinks so with his latest post in why he is leaving Entrecard. His post has sparked a lot of controversy and at the time of this writing spawned several additional posts around the blogshpere with people defending his stance or defending Entrecard. I’m going to take neither side in this blog post.

John makes some valid points. I’ve looked at my traffic from Entrecard and I have similar results as what John is showing in terms of bounce rates, time on site, etc.. So only taking those items into account, it would seem that Entrecard is not really the best system, but there is more to it than just drops. Now while my bounce rate is fairly high, I have seen some other benefits. my subscriber count has increased as well as my Technorati ranking has increased. I can only assume that my subscribers increased because of Entrecard as I’m not aware of any way to tie new subscribers to how they actually found their way onto my site, but I can say the increase in Technorati ranking is a direct result of Entrecard. I’ve gained quite a few links from blogs that would not have linked to me if it had not been for Entrecard. These bloggers found this site as a result of Entrecard and as a result they linked to one of my posts. I’ve done the same of other bloggers as a result of a post I found on their blog while dropping a card.

Now John says that the people who are more active in the system gain the highest ad price, even though Graham says its not related to how many cards you drop. Ad price of blogs are determined by the number of times someone drops a card on your site per day multiplied by 2 and averaged over the last 5 days. This is my understanding of the system and the way ad price is calculated. The number of cards you drop is not considered in the calculation of your advertising price. But while there may not be a direct factor in this calculation there is some correlation between the number of card drops you drop and the number of drops you receive. Why this correlation exists is not totally clear, but it has to do with the inbox. Entrecard users tend to drop on the people who last dropped on them so a lot of people drop on the people in their inbox first. I personally don’t think this is the best strategy. The other strategy that a lot of people use is to just open up a particular category and start dropping on everyone in the category starting with who ever is at the top, which means the prices at the top always seem to grow more than the blogs lower in the category. Is this because people get tried of dropping and never make it to the bottom. I don’t know what others do, but this is how I drop cards and I very rarely make it all the way to the bottom of a particular category  unless its is very small.

I used to spend a good amount of time building up credits, but I only spend a few minutes a day now and I mostly just drop on sites which I’ve started reading as a result in my involvement in Entrecard. I would have never ran across these sites if it would not have been for Entrecard and if there where no other benefits from me having this little card in the sidebar than just me finding these sites, then the space is well utilized.

I’ve posted about Entrecard several times and every time I based the value in Entrecard in the community not the clicks. Entrecard may not be all that useful for blogs such as John Cow, or John Chow and Problogger( Darren has already said he gets paid and I’m sure John Chow does too), but for smaller blogs is a great system, not for the traffic, but for the networking possibilities it provides. Who knows these baby blogs of today may be the huge blogs of tomorrow. I’ve found several blogs on Entrecard that I fully expect to grow into huge blogs in the future and I’m getting links on those blogs. I for one am going to stick around Entrecard for a while and see where things go.
