There has been a lot of talk about getting traffic from social sites such as Stumble Upon, Digg, Reddit, and many others on many forums for the last couple of years. I’ve played around with these sites and its true you can gain a lot of traffic from these sorts or sites. Whether that traffic is useful and converts well is a topic of controversy.
It probably depends a lot on the type of site you are trying to promote and the type of Social Web 2.0 site that you gain the traffic from. I’ve had mixed results from these sort of traffic. Sometimes the traffic is great and sometimes its just traffic that does not put any money in my pocket. As these sites grow in popularity these sites will evolve and more importantly the users who use the sites will evolve, Considering the fact that the web does and will change, it makes sense to get involved in Web 2.0 type sites as the number and effectiveness will only grow over time. There are even startups starting up that will help you grow your exposure on these sites and books that show you how to do it. One book I read recently that I found quite useful is Web 2.0 Traffic secrets.
There are even startup websites that will sell you traffic from these sites. I ran across an interesting site Subvert and Profit that helps you get on on the front page of Digg for a small price. Considering the cost and the potential amount of traffic you will receive from spending a day on the front page of Digg this will be a lot cheaper than any traffic you could purchase from a PPC programs. You can also earn some money from this site if you want to do a little work. Interesting concept and I’m not sure how it will work, but may be something worth checking out. You can sign up here.
